5 years – Eating and Toilet
Allan was attending speech therapy due to his delayed speech development, but he also had other problems. One of them was that he was extremely picky with foods. It was always a struggle to get him to eat.
He had often suffered from tummy aches and he was often cranky due to hunger. In kindergarten Allan refused to come to the table during lunch. When lunchtime came, he hid behind the door and refused to come out before the dishes were removed and the table was cleaned. Due to his inadequate diet, Allan also suffered from constipation. For this reason he didn’t want to go to toilet with the result that he often had poo in his trousers.
Skill 1
Allan’s speech therapist had a meeting with the staff of the kindergarten to figure out how to use Kids’ Skills to help him to learn to eat with others. They concluded that it was necessary to proceed with small steps with Allan. The first step was for Allan to learn to lay the table with other children.
If you feel that your child is spending too much time playing video games or chatting with friends on the net, and your attempts to limit the child’s screen time fail, you may consider using a strategy based on Kids’Skills.
He learned this skill quickly and received a lot of praise from staff as well as his parents. His next skill was to learn to sit together with other children at the table during lunch without having to eat anything. When he mastered this skill he learned to put some food on is plate without having to eat it. In this way Allan progressed step-by-step until, in the end, he was capable of eating together with the other children.
Skill 2
Allan’s parents brought up his poo problem in a family session with the speech therapist. Allan understood that there would be many benefits of him learning to go to toilet regularly. His parents would become happy, he would not have tummy aches, it would be nicer to be in the kindergarten, etc.
Allan wanted his parents, grandmother, and his speech therapist to be his supporters. As his power creature he wanted to have a particular Legocharacter he adored called “Poop-King”. Mother promised to Allan, that she will buy him a Poop-King toy, when he learns to go regularly on the toilet.
Allan practiced his skill by sitting some time on the toilet every day. His mother encouraged him by staying close to him and praising him regardless of whether or not he succeeded in producing anything to the toilet.
Follow-up
Allan learned the skill of defecating into the toilet in a couple of weeks. His mother bought him the Poop-King toy, as promised, and Allan presented proudly it to his other supporters. He was so proud of his accomplishment , that he wanted to teach his skill to others as well. “Look, you can also get a cool Lego character like this if you learn to go to toilet,” he was overheard explaining to his two-year-old cousin, when she was visiting them with her parents.
