Naming Skills
…to build motivation
Ask your child to give the new skill, that they are going to learn, a suitable name. Children tend to be more excited about learning skills that they have named themselves.
Fun or cool names also have a positive influence on the general atmosphere of a conversation, thus feeding your child’s creativity
…to make speaking about it easier
A good name also makes talking about a skill easier. For example, it is easier for a child to talk with other people about their “princess skill” than about “not biting my nails but letting them grow” or about their ”butterfly skill” than about ”learning to let go of my worries when I go to bed in the evening”.
…to promote creativity
Fun or cool names also have a positive influence on the general atmosphere of a conversation, thus feeding your child’s creativity – an important ingredient in the skill building process – especially when it’s time to work out a way for them to practise the skill.
Don’t push too hard
If your child has difficulty suggesting a name for the new skill, give them time to think about it. It’s ok to offer suggestions, but make sure your child is the one who decides on the name.
